Natural Reds[]

Red hair is the most uncommon hair color in the world and natural reds range from levels 4 to 7 on the color scale. Red hair or ginger hair, usually occurs in parts of Europe and less in any other parts of the world. Red hair appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein.

Red hair is caused by high levels of the red pigment in pheomelanin and like blondes, it is low in eumelanin. Natural red heads are usually accompanied by fair skin, freckles, and eye colors that are light. Natural red heads have a difficult time trying to dye their hair a different color due to the unique color. Ever notice how there's never a swatch for red heads when you look at the boxed dyes at the store? Yeah, there's a reason for that. If a red head simply dyes their hair a different color, the natural red tones will be very apparent and results in a totally different color. Red heads would usually have to bleach their hair first if they wish to go lighter or darker. Always be careful not over bleach, though!

Other natural hair colors also have red in them, but not as vibrant as a natural red heads. The red tones in people's hair are usually just regular undertones and nothing that really stands out. Red tones can be found in any other hair color and they are usually characterized as warm toned hair.

Artificial Reds[]

Another type of red is the artificial red found in hair dyes. There are many hair dyes out there that have red tones to them and there are also vibrant reds a.k.a true reds. These type of shades will show a very vibrant red. Another way of achieving red hair is by bleaching. People with naturally dark hair, such as black, can easily achieve red hair by using bleach due to the different levels of colors the hair goes through when being bleached. Luckily the first level is red.
