Assuming you are currently blonde either naturally or lightened and wanting to go rose gold or a rose gold variant such as quartz, opal, iridescent, coral, etc. this is for you. If you are not yet blonde consider reading How To: Get Crazy Colored Locks first but this guide is for those at Level 7 and up blonde shades and thinking of going rose gold.
Where does rose gold get it's gold shade?[]
Contrary to the name of this shade, it tends not use true red nor copper tones mixed with golden tones, instead in some cases tends to use the base of the original blonde hair for it's yellow-orange tones that is being dyed over for the warm gold look. But it doesn't actually mean it will be a warm tone, it just as easily can be neutral, neutral-warm or even neutral-cool. This polychromatic shade can neutralize itself depending on the starting base colour, colour used or both. Because of this there are reports and reviews of rose gold hair dyes not actually resulting in rose gold, so keep this in mind when selecting your shade.
Where does it get the rose-pink shade?[]
Many boxed rose gold shades have slight iridescent (purple) tones indicated by the number 2, perhaps it's even closer to red-violet tones but to take a brands word for it, it is a violet (purple) tone. These shades actually contain no warm tones but may include additional neutral tones, unless the brands labeled incorrectly. So if you are currently platinum blonde, very neutral or beige blonde the following shades most likely will only give you a variation of soft, light, medium, bright or intense blonde shade with a neutral, dirty or cool pink colour.
Some results of Feria Medium Iridescent Blonde 822 (Rose Gold) actually looked more like Feria Smokey Pink P2 (Rosy Blush). So it could be assumed the start hair colour was more platinum or neutral/neutral cool. If in reverse Feria Smokey Pink P2 (Rosy Blush) could result in Feria Medium Iridescent Blonde 822 (Rose Gold) if the base was high in yellow-orange tones. These findings are based on online results and reviews of the mentioned shades, results may vary is a standard disclaimer but when using pastel shades your base colour will most likely have an influence.
When rose gold has golden tones[]
Some boxed rose golds use slight iridescent (purple) tones indicated by the number 2 mixed with slight golden tones indicated by the number 3. These might be safer options for those with a neutral or beige blonde base and could help prevent from hair going too pink. Some examples:
True "Rose Gold" mixes, unknown and other variants[]
When a brand does use red or copper tones and golden tones it actually looks more like natural red hair or strawberry blonde like Natural Instincts Dark Rose Gold Blonde 7RG (Rose Gold). This may or may not what you are looking for or you most likely would have been looking up strawberry blonde or natural red shades instead. But seeing compared to other variants is helpful to know what you may really want or what you definitely don't want.
Another interesting rose gold variant is a brunette rose gold like Preference Very Deep Rose Gold 5.23 (Rio). It is somewhat similar to golden mahogany brunette shades but more neutral so should be flattering to more skin undertones. This is also a good option for those who cannot pull off the lighter hair shades but still want a rose gold look.
Sometimes brands do not use conventional hair tone coding and do not provide their own or details on which tones used like Got2b Metallics Gilded Rose M97, use at your own discretion it may go far more copper, blorange (peach) or pink than you expect but it does appear to be more copper than pink.
Other iridescent and red toned variants like Color Sensation Coral Pink 7.26 (California Sunset), Olia Dark Rose Quartz 7.20, Olia Deep Rose 7.22 or Feria Coral Pink CP1 seems like a more intense version of Feria Medium Iridescent Blonde 822 (Rose Gold) and can prevent cool pink tones from happening but provides a more intense coral rose gold.
As mentioned Feria Smokey Pink P2 (Rosy Blush) might just be a Feria Medium Iridescent Blonde 822 (Rose Gold) variant meant for a platinum base, so if put on a high yellow-orange base may get a more rose gold results. So keep in mind when choosing your shade.
Final Results[]
Depending on how neutral or warm the original blonde shade is, that will most likely deicide the final result. Platinum shades to yellow based blonde shades could result in a soft neutral pink or possibly even cool pink. Bleached, lightened and/or high yellow-orange based blonde shades could result in a neutral to warm rose gold to slight blorange. Depending on final results, this shade could compliment cool or warm toned skin and will compliment those who can pull off lighter hair shades. This might be a shade those with olive toned skin may want to stay clear of if results come up too red toned looking.
If you want an unmistakably warm shade and are not afraid of copper or red tones consider trying strawberry blonde shades or other natural looking red shades with golden toned highlights. This can give a warm metallic-like effect of conventional rose golds. Alternatively, you can try blorange shade range instead.
