The application of colour, glitter, illumination, or shine to the skin's complexion. It can be used to make the face look as if it is wet, glassy, or glowing. Highlighter is often used on the 'highest' points of the face where light will hit. It gives the illusion of a light shining on the skin, or if used in certain ways, as if the glow is coming from within. Blush and Highlighter can often be found in the same palette, but many makeup styles often use either one or the other.

Textures[]

  • Powdered Highlighter - The preferred and more available form of Highlighter. Available pressed, baked, and loose.
  • Cream Highlighter - The less available form of Highlighter compared to powder or liquid. Can be difficult to blend out on dry skin.
  • Stick Highlighter - A somewhat available form of Highlighter and tends to be chosen by personal preference.
  • Liquid Highlighter - A type of Highlighter available almost as much as powder. Occasionally thinned out with other face products to provide an all-over glow. Very easy to blend out. Oil forms do not dry down and are more often used for the body.
  • Eyeshadow and Glitter - Eyeshadow and glitter are often used in lieu of other highlighter forms, if someone prefers a more glittery look. Some eyeshadows have shimmery or metallic finishes that are very similar to other highlighters.

Application[]

With liquid, stick, and cream Highlighter, apply and blend with fingers (or the stick it's available in), you can blend further with a a medium to large size Blending Brush or Blush Brush. For powder, apply with a highlighter brush or fan brush in a side-sweeping motion. An eyeshadow brush can also be used for more precise application.

Areas to Highlight[]

Ideal but not exclusive areas to use highlighters: Cheek bones, forehead, chin, under dark circles, above the jawline (under cheek shading area), cupid's bow, above/below brows, dimples, inner corners of the eye and above/below the hook or bent area of the nose.
