A natural dye for those against damaging their hair with harsh chemicals. The colour ranges from oranges and reds to warm dark browns. Henna is a dye made from the henna tree and is available as a paste, a solid, and a powder. Often henna is mixed with other plant powders to produce a darker result, as pure henna will produce a carrot-orange colour on blonde or bleached hair. Henna is also a natural conditioner for the hair and has a strong earthy smell.

Application[]

The form your henna comes in will affect application. Follow the directions on the box or container. Standard instructions are as follows:

  1. Mix the henna with hot water to activate the colour, using enough water to form a paste.
  2. Apply henna paste to wet, clean hair. No need to cover, and no worries if it gets on skin. It washes off of skin after a day or two.
  3. Leave in hair for anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour. Less time will result in a natural orange-red tint. More time will result in more colour deposited.
  4. Rinse out of hair with plain water.

Cost, Upkeep and Consideration[]

  • A fairly inexpensive dying option.
  • Reapplication is anywhere from 3-6 months or when regrowth becomes noticeable.
  • Grey roots can be resistant to henna stains.
  • For blonde hair, can produce vivid orange hair. This fades to a natural red auburn after a few months.
  • How long you leave it in your hair when dying will affect how much colour is deposited in hair.
  • Darker hair will see less vivid results.
